Q: Why does the unit not start in the last mode used?
A: Our units always switch on in Power mode and at maximum sensitivity for maximum safety.
Q: Unit does not respond to key press.
A: The keypad, connector or PCB could be faulty. Check connections, keypad or PCB failure.
Q: Unit detects EZiTRACE signal in both 8 and 33 KHz modes.
A: Set the EZiCAT to the same mode as the EZiTRACE. With a large sensitivity range the EZiCAT may detect the low level. Check sensitivity in each mode.
Q: Why can I not detect the EziTRACE signal?
A: Check that the EZiCAT is set to the same mode as the EZiTRACE. Check that the EZiTRACE is not connected to a non-metallic service. If you need to trace a non-metallic service, please see our accessories for details on how you can do this.
Q: How can I test that my EZiCAT is working OK?
A: When the EZiCAT switches on first it goes through a self test to check that it is functioning correctly. Please see User Manual for fault details. It is also possible to do an Extended Self Test. This is a user activated test, for details on how to perform this test and read the results, please click here. Another way to check that your EZiCAT is working ok is to test it over a known service in each mode as the batteris may be drained. Are you adequatley trained in how to use a digital cable locator? If not, please read the User Manual or attend a training session.
Q: I get erratic performance?
A: You may have a faulty unit. Test in accordance with methods described in the service manual.
Q: How often should I have my EZiCAT serviced?
A: The EZiCAT is often used as a safety tool, correct operation should be regularly checked by an approved service centre. The unit may have developed a fault since it was last serviced. A service interval of 12 months is recommended. Please contact Cable Detection Ltd on +44 (0) 1782 654450 to find your nearest Service Centre.
Q: The visual indication does not reach to the top of the display.
A: The indication should progressively rise to a maximum over the service and then fall. The peak indication obtained reduces with increasing service depth. A maximum "peak" reading does not necessarily mean that the display bar needs to be at the very top.
Q: How do I set the mode?
A: With the unit powered on, press the F key on the display panel. As you press the F key, the mode should change. The mode is indicated by a light coming on next to the relevant mode symbol.
Q: The mode will not change when I press the mode selection key.
A: Do a quick check of the other keys on the keypad. You may have a faulty keypad, connector or PCB. Check connections, keypad or PCB failure.
Q: There is no audio response when locating multiple services?
A: The audio response adapts automatically to pinpoint the strongest signal and may not adapt to a smaller signal. Move the EZiCAT away from all services for 10 seconds and then pinpoint the smaller signal first.

The unit may have developed a fault since it was last checked or serviced. Please call Cable Detection on +44 (0) 1782 654450 to arrange for a service.
Q: The visual indication does not reach to top of the display.
A: The indication should progressively rise to a maximum over the service and then fall. The peak indication obtained reduces with increasing service depth. A maximum "peak" reading does not necessarily mean that the display bar is at the very top.
Q: How do I measure depth?
A: Depth can be measured in conjunction with the EZiTRACE operating in 33 KHz mode. Both units must be set to 33 KHz mode. Read the User Manual or attend a training session.
Q: Depth readings are not constant.
A: The quality of the depth reading depends on the signal quality, determined by the amount of signal and level of external electrical interference. Move away from sources of electrical interference or increase the signal strength. Increase the EZiTRACE signal strength.
Q: Why is the depth reading in error?
A: High level signal interference can introduce reading errors. Increase the signal strength or move away from the source of interference. Depth reading accuracy can be poor due to field distortion due to adjacent utility lines. Move to an area clear of other detectable lines, maintain a clearance of at least 5 times the depth. Remove any common earth bonding between adjacent lines to reduce signal coupling. Reduce coupling to other services by positioning the earth pin away from them and at approximately 90 degree to the service direction. EZiTRACE induction mode can couple to adjacent services. You can also directly connect the EZiTRACE to the service. Measuring depth adjacent to a bend in the utility line, service tee or change in depth can cause depth errors. Move 10 times the depth away from any changes in the direction of the utility. Above ground metal structures, such as safety or security fences can cause field distortion. Concrete reinforcing REBAR can cause field distortion. Lift the EZiCAT >30cm in the air to improve accuracy and subtract height offset. The EZiCAT will pick up the EZiTRACE directly when operating in induction mode and this can cause a depth error. Move >30m from the EZiTRACE.
Q: What are the service code indications seen when I press the depth key?
A: Service codes are presented to alert the user to 5 different "out of specification" operating conditions. If the incorrect mode is selected "---" is displayed. Service codes are explained on the pictographic label on the side of the unit. Signal too small indicated by "LO". Signal too large indicated by "OL". Depth greater than 3m indicated by "888". Depth less than 0.3m indicated by "000".
Q: Why does the audio response change?
A: Audio pinpointing is fully automatic and adapts from maximum sensitivity during the locate process to provide a pinpoint of the service. The unit adapts to the largest signal, if this results in a small signal not being pointpointed by audio then reverse the order of use and locate the smaller signal first.
Q: How do I set the mode?
A: With the unit powered on, press the F key on the display panel. As you press the F key, the mode should change. The mode is indicated by a light coming on next to the relevant mode symbol.
Q: How do I trace a non-metallic pipe or duct? (Less than 15cm in diameter)
A: You will need to use an EZiROD Service Tracer in conjunction with the EZiTRACE Signal Generator and EZiCAT. You will need to feed the EZiROD through the pipe or duct. The EZiTRACE will then be used to put a signal through the EZiROD which will be picked up by the EZiCAT. The signal can be traced the whole way down the EZiROD or it can be traced to the “Sonde“ on the tip of the EZiROD. Remember to set your EZiCAT and your EZiTRACE to the same mode.
Q: How do I trace a non-metallic pipe or duct? (Greater than 15cm in diameter)
A: You will need to use a self contained transmitting device called a Sonde in conjunction with an EZiCAT. The Sonde can be screwed onto a drain rod and pushed into the sewer or duct you are tracing. It can then be located using the EZiCAT in 33kHz.
Q: Using 8 or 33 KHz mode multple services are located.
A: The EZiTRACE used in induction mode can cause the coupling of a signal to adjacent services. Move the EZiTRACE to an area where services are spaced further apart. Always try to use direct connection where possible. Often services are bonded at a common earth point. Remove common earth bonding if possible.
Q: How far can I trace the EziTRACE signal?
A: The EZiTRACE signal reduces with distance at a rate depending on the diameter of the utility line and the insulation. Typical range exceeds 100m. Select 8 KHz mode or move the EZiTRACE to increase the signal strength.
Q: How do I get the strongest signal onto the service?
A: Direct connection mode generally results in the strongest signal. If possible use the direct connection method. Using the connection mode get the best earthing connection. Connect the EZiTRACE earth lead to a large earth bonded metal structure or improve the connection of the earth pin using water, placing in moist ground or use a longer pin. If using Induction mode the signal reduces with increasing service depth. Select a location with the smallest distance between the EZiTRACE and service. Keep the EZiCAT and EZiTRACE as close as popssible. Move the EZiTRACE toward the EZiCAT, maintain at least 10 m separation.
Q: What cleaning materials can I use?
A: Do not use solvents as this may damage the labels or case plastics. Use warm soapy water Most common industrual cleaning products can be used to remove paint, grease, dirt or or other contaminants.
